Pirates of the Caribbean hits Stranger Tides
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides features the returning Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, the fourth offering of the movie franchise. The Disney pirate franchise has earned megabucks worldwide with a gross of over $3 billion in totality. The newest offering, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, lacks familiar faces such as Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom and instead replaces them with veteran actors Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane. Longtime Pirates character Hector Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, will be part of the movie.
Jack Sparrow searches for the mystical Fountain of Youth in On Stranger Tides. Angelica Malon (Penelope Cruz), a mysterious figure from Jack's past joins him in the adventure. Jack is joined in the search by the fearsome pirate Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane. With a ragtag crew of pirates and eerie zombies, Blackbeard aims to avert a prophecy that foretells his death at the hands of a one-legged man. By coincidence, retired pirate Hector Barbossa sports a peg-leg to replace his lost limb. Many of these characters are likely to make an appearance on t-shirts with Pirates of the Caribbean on them and other merchandise.
Brilliant shots of the beautiful and vibrant landscapes has always been a strength of the series. Johnny Depp infuses the Jack Sparrow character with a blend of deftness and excitement, with a definite method to the madness. It is practically impossible to get a Pirates of the Caribbean tee without Depp on it, such is his importance to the franchise. Depp has cited Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones as a source of inspiration for the character.
Future films are already being planned following On Stranger Tides. The plan is for the fifth Pirates film to be a standalone project. The franchise will continue with Depp as Jack Sparrow, for as long as he wishes to. A video game was initially projected to be released alongside the release On Stranger Tides, but was cancelled after development stalled so fans will have to make do with Pirates of the Caribbean t shirts and other items.
